History of Canuck Stuff Club

Don and Mylène Saxton, both former Canadian National Team players, formed the Canuck Stuff Volleyball Club in 1988 in Calgary, Alberta Canada.

The Club originally had one women's team and one men's team. The senior teams competed very successfully in Canadian and international tournaments (winning 7 Canadian Open Championships and one U.S. Open Championship).

It wasn't until 1997 that the club added youth to its program. This was the true beginning of what is now one of Canada's largest and most successful volleyball club programs. Canuck Stuff Volleyball Club is now run by a volunteer Board of Directors and currently holds National Youth Championship titles plus dozens of Provincial Championship titles including an amazing 16 championship titles in 2004!

Canuck Stuff Philosophy

To continually promote both volleyball excellence for each athlete and a life long love of the game in a caring, supportive and competitive environment. We believe that volleyball is more than just a game; it is a life experience.

Canuck Stuff Volleyball Club will provide excellent facilities, an efficient and responsive administration, quality coaching and role modeling in a positive, encouraging and supportive environment. This will enable players who have a desire to achieve their potential, a strong work ethic and the capacity to be team players within the club philosophy, to avail themselves of the opportunities provided to excel at their highest level both on and off the court.

Philosophy: (Guiding principles)

1) While equal playing time is not a goal, coaches are encouraged to give all eligible players the opportunity to play in competitions.

2) We believe at Canuck Stuff that volleyball is a game where work ethic, attitude, and sportsmanship are more important than winning at all costs and that these attributes lead to success both on and off the court.

3) We believe that coaches exert a powerful influence over their players and we insist that coaches and other club officials, while expecting the best from their players, exhibit at all times a positive, constructive and supportive coaching strategy and provide a role that is beyond reproach.

The History of Volleyball

BACK in 1895, in a YMCA somewhere in America basketball coach W G Morgan was faced with a class of wealthy businessmen who found his sport a little too rough for their tastes. Fearing loss of their subscriptions, his desperate solution was to mix basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a brand new sport mintonette.

Soon after he was offered some good advice. An offhand remark that can perhaps, with the benefit of hindsight, be seen as the equivalent of somebody politely pointing out to Messes Lennon & McCartney that maybe their new song "She really likes you." might scan better as "She Loves you Yea Yea Yea". In this case during a demonstration of his new game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more descriptive name for the sport. 70 years later volleyball was in the Olympic Games and now, globally, is second only to football in popularity as a participation sport.
